Dagayday Festival

Dagayday Festival is a cultural and religious festival in Samboan, Cebu, Philippines every September 29.

Dagayday Festival is one of the contingents of cultural fests that participate in Pasigarbo sa Sugbo every August.

Etymology

Dagayday is derived from the Cebuano word that means flow of water. It describes the way water comes forth from a spring or tumble down from waterfalls. Dagayday Festival is also an expression of faith to the town’s patron, St. Michael the Archangel.

When the Spaniards spread Catholicism in the southern part of Cebu, they founded the church in Samboan as a visita of the parish of Tanjay, Negros Oriental in 1780. Eventually, the town prospered and the church became a parish on November 3, 1784.

The stone church and convent was build within the incumbency of Fr. Romualdo Avila in 1842. It is a heritage church, and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) installed a Level II marker in 2016.

The colonizers also constructed the watchtower that overlooked the Tañon Street in 1878 and protected the townsfolk from ravaging Moro raiders. The famous Escala de Jacob consists of 157 steps from the tower down to the shores.
