Dahunog sa Dipolog

Dahunog sa Dipolog is a music and cultural festival and religious fiesta in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines from the last week of September until October 7.

It is also held in honor of the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary

The city also celebrates the P’gsalabuk Festival every May.

Etymology

The word dahunog means ‘rumbling sound’ in Cebuano language. It refers to the collective drumbeats by participating live bands that envelop and enliven the city during the height of the fest.

History of Dahunog sa Dipolog

Dahunog sa Dipolog was first held in 2005. It was conceptualized to encourage and showcase the talents of city’s children and youth in the fields of music and dance.

The climax of the fest is a grand, entertaining parade where performers in eye-catching, colorful costumes dance to the drumbeats and music of live bands.

Participated by students from elementary schools and high schools, their performances are judged and the winners of the competition are hailed towards the closing of the revelries.

Aside from the grand parade, a search for Miss Teen Tourism for high school students are also held. Another competition for young kids is search for the Little King and Queen.

In 2023, other activities included martial arts (Arnis tournament), coffee fest, pet shows, concerts, arts, swimming competition, and sports.

These activities are conducted in the city’s celebration of the Children’s Month spearheaded by the city government through the city tourism department.

Devotion to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary

The natives settled in Polanco before the coming of the Spaniards. They then moved to Nipaan located on a hilly spot to find safety from piracy.

Spanish colonizers organized Dipolog in 1834, instituting a civil government. People moved to the present location along Dipolog River.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral Parish is the center of the devotion for the patroness of the city. Its stone structure was completed in 1894. It was founded by the Jesuits as a parish on June 30, 1896. Fr. Esteban Yepes, SJ, was its first parish priest.

Jose Rizal is said to have designed the ceiling made of wood, reliefs of the four evangelists, and retablos of saints during his time of exile in Dapitan.

The Jesuits administered the church between 1896 and 1939. Afterwards, it was turned over to the secular clergy. Fr. Nicasio Patangan was the first secular and Filipino priest to become its parish priest.

The Diocese of Dipolog was created on July 31, 1967. Bishop Feliz Zafra D.D. became the first bishop on October 24 of that same year.
