Sinigayan Festival is a cultural and religious festival in the city of Sagay, Negros Occidental, Philippines every March 19.
Organized by the city government in cooperation with the parish, it is held in conjunction with the fiesta of St. Joseph the Worker, the city’s patron.
Moreover, it is an annual expression of thanksgiving of the city for the bountiful sea harvest, a means to showcase its rich natural resources, and celebrate its vibrant culture.
The city also celebrates Sagay City Charter Anniversary every June 11.
Etymology
Sinigayan Festival comes from the root word sigay, which refers to shells that can be found in the city’s islets and shores. It is also origin of the name of the city.
History of Sinigayan Festival
Sinigayan Festival was first conducted in 1997.
Devotion to St. Joseph
St. Joseph Parish was founded in 1950. A new church was built near the original church. Both churches remain functional and continue to be utilized by churchgoers. The rectory was consecrated on June 16, 2022.
Sinigayan Festival Activities
Activities of Sinigayan Festival includes opening program, parade, festival village with trade fair, dance performances, cultural presentations, film showing, games, exhibits, and entertainment. Among the participants are constituent barangays, government officers and employees, schools, non-government organizations, and city folks.
How to reach Sagay City, Negros Occidental
Sagay City can be reached via regular trips of provincial buses passing by its main thoroughfares from other cities and towns of Negros Occidental.
