Sagay City Charter Anniversary is celebrated yearly in Sagay City, Negros Occidental, Philippines every June 11. It marks the conversion from a town to a city pursuant to Republic Act No. 8192 that was approved in 1996.
The date is a special nonworking holiday in the city by virtue of Republic Act No. 11134 that was approved by Rodrigo Duterte on November 9, 2018.
The city also celebrates the Sinigayan Festival every March.
History of Sagay City
Sagay City is located in the northern tip of Negros island and fondly described as a city shaped like a ice cream cone. Its name was derived from the sigay, referring to shells that were found abundant in its shorelines.
It is formed by Asuncion Pass and Visayan Sea in the north, and bounded by Talisay City, Calatrava, Cadiz City, Silay City, Escalante City, and Toboso.
Francisco Rodriguez and Basilio Cordova founded Sagay, which was called Arguelles, in 1860. Situated at the mouth of Bulanon River, it grew in size and prosperity that it eventually became a town.
A decade later, its center was moved to Pueblo de Magallanes (presently called Old Sagay) by the order of the colonial government.
In post-war years, its center was moved to Dalupan and finally to Barangay Rizal on December 22, 2002.
The cityhood of Sagay was formally filed in the Legislative branch through House Bill No. 6543 by representative Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr. and Senate Bill NO. 1191 by Senator Raul Roco.
On June 11, 1996, then President Fidel V. Ramos approved Republic Act No. 8192, otherwise known as “An Act Converting the Municipality of Sagay in the Province of Negros Occidental into a Component City to be Known as the City of Sagay”.
The law was ratified through a plebiscite on August 10 in the same year. Ramos visited Negros Occidental for the proclamation of the turn-out of the plebiscite.
With the ratification of the law, Sagay City became the seventh component city of the province. Joseph Marañon was the first city mayor.
Sagay City Charter Anniversary
Culminating activities of the city charter anniversary often falls on June 12th, which is the Philippines’ Independence Day. Among the activities that may be organized include entertainment, sports, workshops, performing arts, competitions, and talent contests.
