Albay Day is the founding anniversary of the province of Albay, Philippines every April 3. The date is a special non-working holiday in the entire province by virtue of Republic Act No. 11119 signed by President Rordrigo Duterte on October 30, 2018.
There are some years that Albay Day is held in time with the Magayon Festival.
History of Albay
Albay was known as Baybayon in the past. It may have been explored as early as the 16th century by Spanish colonizers Luiz Enriquez de Guzman (1569) and Juan de Salcedo (1573). On April 3, 1574, it became an encomienda given to Juan Guerra and this is the date being commemorated in Albay Day annually. According to a historian, it was officially organized in 1636.
In the following centuries, its settlement grew but the eruption of Mt. Mayon in February of 1814 resulted to a shrink in population (see Cagsawa Festival). Its population would only return to pre-earthquake level in 1850 and such recovery was attributed to the development within the term of Jose Maria PeƱaranda, who was governor between May 1834 and 1843. His monument stands in the town plaza to honor his life and works.
Throughout its history, it had several organizations that re-organized its boundaries. In 1846, Masbate was separated along with the islands of Ticao and Burias. In 1894, Sorsogon seceded to become an independent province and so did Catanduanes in 1945.
During the American period, its civil government was established through Act No. 122 on April 26, 1901. Then Act No. 2711 was promulgated on March 10, 1917 that amended the Administrative Code and it established the province of Albay.
The province presently is composed of fifteen towns and three cities of Legazpi, Ligao, and Tabaco.
