Panaad sa Camiguin, also called simply Panaad, is a religious act in the province of Camiguin, Philippines every Holy Week. It is a yearly pilgrimage act of Roman Catholic believers who, in fulfilling a spiritual promise, ascend Mt. Old Vulcan through the Camiguin Walkway and/or embark on a two-day walk around the island.
Camiguin also celebrates the Lanzones Festival every October and Araw ng Camiguin every January 7.
History of Panaad sa Camiguin
The word panaad means pledge, promise, vow, or commitment.
Panaad sa Camiguin is an annual pilgrimage among adherents of Catholic faith during the Holy Week where they walk the seventy-kilometer circumferential road for days. It is performed to fulfill their personal, spiritual commitment, to do an act of penance, and to reflect the life, passion, and death of Jesus Christ. It began as a religious custom in the 1970s and over the years, it has grown to become another reason for tourists and pilgrims to visit the province of Camiguin every Lenten season.
The panaad often starts at the crack of dawn on Good Friday and ends on Easter Sunday. There is no official designated area where participants can start to walk, as locals begin wherever they are. It is generally suggested that participants begin at Benoni Port in the southeastern town of Mahinog.
The panaad pilgrimage is also achieved through an eight-kilometer climb up to Mt. Old Vulcan in Bonbon in the northwestern town of Catarman. The climb is made through the Camiguin Walkway, also called Walkway to the Old Vulcan and Station of the Cross. It begins as a paved trail and ascends through moss-covered steps, that then gives way to forested dirt footpath. The trail has fourteen, life-sized Stations of the Cross as well as scenic views of the island from the mountainside.
How to reach Camiguin
