Kamundagan Festival is a Christmas festival in the city of Naga, Camarines Sur, Philippines every month of December. Its month-long calendar includes both the advent and yuletide seasons.
History of Kamundagan Festival
Kamundagan Festival began within the term of then Mayor Jesse Robredo in 1992. It comes from the word kamundagan that means birth. The fest was organized to celebrate Christmas, the birth of Christ, for the whole month of December.
Previously, it coincided with Charter Day held every 15th of December to commemorate the date Naga became a city. To this end, Republic Act No. 9089 was passed on April 18, 2001 declaring December 15 as Naga City Charter Day and a special non-working holiday.
However, the law was repealed with the passage of Republic Act No. 9210, moving the date to June 18. The 18th of June was the date that Republic Act No. 305, the legislation that created the cityhood of Naga, was approved.
Kamundagan Festival Activities
During Kamundagan Festival, people can visit public spaces in the city that are decorated with the festive season’s decorations. Plaza Rizal and Plaza Quinse Martires, in particular, are decorated with Christmas lights. A giant Christmas tree is also lit for the entire month. Besides, there is Agro-Industrial Fair, entertainment, variety shows, a song festival parade, the Kiri-Kiti dance contest (sparklers), beauty pageant. Another highlight is the Pastores de Belen, a competition among constituent barangays in coming up with displays of the nativity scene that would be displayed along Panganiban Drive.
